Master how to train a dog basic commands—Sit, Stay, and Come—with this step-by-step guide using treats, praise, and short training sessions.
Here's a quick guide to train your dog with basic commands like "sit," "stay," and "come" using treats and praise:
1. Sit
- Step 1: Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose.
- Step 2: Slowly move the treat up over their head. As their head follows, their bottom will naturally lower.
- Step 3: Once they sit, say “sit” and give them the treat with lots of praise.
- Repeat until they sit on command without a treat as a guide.
2. Stay
- Step 1: Ask your dog to “sit.”
- Step 2: Hold your palm out and say “stay” while stepping back slowly.
- Step 3: If they stay, reward them with a treat and praise.
- Increase distance gradually, rewarding each successful attempt. Practice until they hold their position.
3. Come
- Step 1: Put your dog on a leash and say “come” in a happy voice while gently tugging the leash.
- Step 2: When they come to you, reward them with a treat and praise.
- Practice in short sessions until they come reliably, then try off-leash in a safe area.
Each session should be short (5-10 minutes) to keep their attention and always end with praise and a treat!
