Common Colors of British Shorthair Cats

Discover common British Shorthair colors and how their fur distinguishes purebred from mixed-breed cats. Find the perfect color for your feline friend!

There are many types of British Shorthair cats, but they are generally divided into two categories: purebred British Shorthairs and mixed-breed British Shorthairs. Although their appearances are quite similar, the color of their fur can help distinguish them from each other.

I. Purebred British Shorthair Cats

This breed has a rather short nose and mouth with round cheeks, giving them a charming, cartoon-like appearance. They resemble breeds such as the Chartreux or Russian Blue. The most common eye color for this breed is golden yellow. The fur of purebred British Shorthairs is thick, soft, and evenly distributed, with a slight bounce to it.

II. Mixed-Breed British Shorthair Cats

The biggest difference between mixed-breed British Shorthairs and purebred ones is their fur. While the fur of purebred British Shorthairs is thick and soft, the fur of mixed-breed British Shorthairs is thinner and less uniform. A popular mixed breed today is the Scottish Fold Shorthair Cat, which is a cross between the Scottish Fold and the purebred British Shorthair.

2.2 Tabby British Shorthair Cats

The combination of the Tabby cat and British Shorthair has created this very distinctive-colored breed.

2.3 Bicolor British Shorthair Cats

This breed features two colors and is most famous for the Tuxedo cat pattern.

2.4 Himalayan British Shorthair Cats

This breed is a cross between the British Shorthair and the Siamese cat, although they tend to have more characteristics of the Siamese cat than the British Shorthair.

III. Reasons to Keep a British Shorthair Cat

This breed is very friendly, affectionate, and loves to cuddle with its owner. In addition, British Shorthairs are also very good with children, so you can feel safe keeping this breed even if you have young kids at home.
